Motivation Special Interest Group (SIG)

The Motivation SIG brings together researchers, educators, and practitioners interested in understanding and fostering motivation in second language learning and teaching. The SIG embraces a broad range of theoretical perspectives and research traditions, including the L2 Motivational Self System and future self-guides, Self-Determination Theory, task motivation, metamotivation, self-regulatory orientations, achievement goal theory, mindsets, grit, and expectancy-value theory. The SIG welcomes diverse methodological approaches and emerging directions in motivation research. Through scholarly discussions, interactive events, collaborative initiatives, and practice-oriented activities, the SIG seeks to foster dialogue between researchers and practitioners, advance the theorization and empirical understanding of L2 motivation, and promote the development and evaluation of research-informed interventions and pedagogical practices that enhance learners' motivation, engagement, and language development.
